Magical Schools, Essences, and Spells per Day
The Schools and Essences of Magic
The types of magic are organized into five Elemental Schools and six Alignment Schools.
Schools encompass all magic that embodies the essence of their elements or concepts. This magic can be literal, like in the case of a Fire mage who casts fire spells, or it can be a more metaphorical interpretation, like a barbarian whose spell-like abilities revolve around Fire's metaphorical interpretation of rage and fury.
For some more examples, the Earth School encompasses both magic that physically sculpts terrain as well as magic that increases the strength or resilience of people or objects. A paladin in shining armor would be as good of a candidate for this school as an Earth mage. Likewise, the Fire School encompasses fire magic and magic that manifests fury or boldness. Barbarian rage is a good example of such a magical ability.
Below, each school is given an abbreviated list of "essences" (or interpretations) but note that this list is by no means comprehensive. When selecting the magical schools of characters, players are encouraged to collaborate to identify which school embodies the spirit of their character's abilities best.

- Water (Flow, Tranquility, Freezing, Purity, ...)

Magical Mastery
Whether through focused study, tranquil meditation, or tenacious training, mastering one's inner magical potential is a journey that takes time and experience. Magical experience in a particular school is measured through Magical Mastery. Magical Mastery provides a bonus to spell casting rolls ranging from +0 to +7.
Magical Mastery can be increased by investing earned Progression Points. For more information on progression, see Character Progression.
Spells Known
A character can only know so many spells at a single time.
Spells per Day
If a character has invested into multiple magical schools, they only gain magical stress from the school in which they have the highest mastery.

Recovering Spells per Day
Magical stress is not recovered at the end of a scene. Instead, it is recovered after an uninterrupted full-night's rest.
